Carmel Haueter has been the face of the Tuscarawas Rainbow Connection for more than 22 years, and she has made sacrifices to grow this organization to unimaginable heights. It was not easy for all those involved with the Rainbow Connection to accept that she was retiring. Unfortunately, we could not hold her hostage and needed to respect her decision. Although we have not had much time together, Carmel has made a lasting impression on me.
I was completely surprised when she told me that she was not from Tuscarawas County because the passion she displays towards those in the community is unparalleled. It has been a little overwhelming taking on this position and trying to fill her shoes. Many people in this wonderful community have said that it will be difficult to fill her shoes because of all that she has done, but my goal is not to fill her shoes. My goal will be to honor her by putting my heart and soul into this community as she has done. I hope to have an impact on this community like she has.
Carmel received the highest honor this week when she was awarded the Tuscarawas County Chamber of Commerce Hall of Fame Award. If you look at those who have received this award, you will quickly realize how monumental of an accomplishment it is. We all should strive to be kind and look out for each other so that we can all flourish and be the best versions of ourselves. We need more examples like Carmel in our world. We all wish Carmel the best in retirement as she will enjoy more time with her grandchildren and husband Jim Haueter.
